Wroclaw (Poland)

Wroclaw is a mid-sized city in south-western Poland, with a lively student population and rich history. The future goals and vision of Wroclaw’s mobility are defined both in the Wroclaw Mobility Policy and in the Wroclaw SUMP and are consistent with the objectives specified in other strategic documents, e.g. Wroclaw’s Master plan. The 2018 Travel Surveys showed the following modal split: 41% of car traffic, 28% of public transportation, 6% of cycling, 24% of walking, 1% of another mode of transport. In a current SUMP for Wroclaw (2019-2024), we want to reach a modal split of 65% of the share of non-car travels in the city.

For Wroclaw the most important and urgent actions according to the SUMP prioritization are the expansion of the public transport system and the transformation of the city centre according to given priorities – the development of pedestrian and cyclist-friendly spaces. Fulfilling these actions, 2 new tram lines are under construction (11 km in total, completed by 2023) and 1 under design. In addition, in 2021 Wrocław is developing the “Master plan for a city centre” strategy and an action plan for bicycle infrastructure until 2030.

Additionally, being aware of the climate changes, the importance of environment protection and the need for transport nuisance reduction as well as the need to educate sustainable behaviour and promote sustainable mobility among citizens, we decided to continue actions related to these issues, even though they were not selected by the stakeholders as necessary and urgent. Initiatives such as Cycling May, School Street, and GrowGreen are just a few examples.
